Robert Standish is a Los Angeles-based American painter whose practice centers on the construction of layered abstract visual fields.

His earlier work in photorealism informs his attention to surface, structure, and image formation, carried into abstraction through an intuitive, material-driven process.

Influenced by Color Field painting, Abstract Expressionism, and Abstract Spiritualism, Standish explores the emotive and transcendent possibilities of color, shape, texture, and gesture.

His work is held in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (photographic works from his photorealist practice), Laguna Art Museum, Lancaster Museum of Art and History, Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, JPMorgan Chase, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, and Stanford University, among others.

His paintings have been exhibited at the Hammer Museum, Torrance Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, and Martin Lawrence Galleries, including a duo exhibition in San Francisco featuring his work alongside paintings by Sam Francis.

In 2025, actor and collector Nicolas Cage acquired two of Standish’s paintings for his private collection.
